Getting Started

Your Role As a Member

First and foremost, have fun!

Start by reading our online Member Handbook which may be found in the website’s Members’ Corner. In it, you’ll learn about our traditions and receive advice on how to get the most out of your membership. It’s an easy, fun read.

Reach out. Begin by using the RHS website tools created just for you to send messages to members and queens in your local area. Introduce yourself.

You will receive messages from other members through the website, perhaps inviting you to a gathering or just to say “hello.” Responding promptly to member messages is an important part of your role as a member. Besides, you never know when an email from Hatquarters will drop in your inbox with a fabulous opportunity just for members!

Posting on our private website forums is another excellent way to get to know others better.

Here’s What You Need to Know Now

Upon joining the RHS, every member and queen is automatically included in our official worldwide RHS chapter and through our private members-only website has access 24/7 to thousands of other members across the globe. We have members in all 50 states and 15 countries. In addition to our website online activities, there are a host of tips and tools to be enjoyed including access to RHS private social media groups.

If available in your area, you may align with a local chapter by messaging the queen. When you connect, ask questions about their activities and meeting times to see if there is a match. If there is no active chapter in your area, consider starting one in your own neighborhood. There is always room for one more.

  • Regalia. That’s our word to describe the outfits we wear. Those over 50 wear red hats and purple clothing and if under 50, wear pink hats and lavender clothing. Don’t think of regalia as a uniform. Let the creative juices flow and keep fun at the heart of it.
  • Public demeanor. When donning RHS regalia in public, you are representing The Red Hat Society. Be kind, polite, and tip when appropriate.
  • Choose a Royal Nick Name. Take some time to bestow upon yourself a Royal Nick Name. It can reflect one of your interests, hobbies or talents such as our singing Member Services Manager LaTonya who is self-deemed Lady Harmony.
  • Do you need a hat, a purple shirt or some bling? Find everything you need at Red Hat Society Store, Red Hat Marketplace, and Royal Splendor. They are at your service!

Happy Hatting!

The Red Hat Society is a membership organization. All members pay dues to RHS Hatquarters. Those funds are funneled back into the Society to maintain the organization and to provide membership programs.
